ABSTRACT

The New Zealand mainland comprises North, South, and Stewart Islands, and the biogeography of this central region is treated later, in Chapters 7 through 11. Before approaching this complex topic, the biogeography of the outlying parts of the New Zealand plateau is examined, beginning in the north (this chapter) and then moving south (the next chapter). New Caledonia is of special interest, and the offshore islands on the northern part of the New Zealand plateau, while small, host a diverse flora and fauna with many endemics as well as interesting connections with areas outside New Zealand.
