ABSTRACT

This chapter provides details on a number of commonly used process units: reactors, heat exchangers, columns of various types (distillation, absorption, adsorption, evaporation, and extraction), dryers, and grinders. As one would expect, the treatment of topics in this chapter is somewhat supercial. Details of other process unit operations specic to waste management are available in the literature and are summarized in Chapter 11. The general subject of uid ow is addressed in the next chapter. The reader should note that the general subjects of health risk assessment and accident and emergency management are not addressed in this chapter. Although these two concerns are noted in some detail in Chapter 13, chemical processes and their accompanying equipment should always be designed to permit safe operation.
