ABSTRACT
The complete design specication for a medium-to large-sized chemical process includes process diagrams; energy and material balance tables; chemical, mechanical, electrical, metallurgical, and civil engineering design considerations and plans and specication; and process ow sheets. The process ow sheet is the key instrument for dening, rening, and documenting a chemical process. The process ow diagram is the authorized process blueprint, serves as the framework for specications used in equipment designation and design, and is the single, authoritative document employed to dene, construct, and operate a chemical process. This chapter explains the different types of ow sheets encountered in process operation and design, and the role of these ow sheets in process development and improvement.
