ABSTRACT

There are numerous areas of environmental concerns that are incorporated under the pollution prevention umbrella. The primary pollution prevention components are source reduction, highlighted in Chapter 19, and closed-loop recycling, highlighted in Chapter 20 of this book. Another major component of pollution prevention is energy conservation. Energy utilization and energy conservation issues have signicantly affected American life since the Arab oil embargo in 1973. Energy conservation is directly related to pollution prevention since a reduction in energy demand generally corresponds to less energy production and, consequently, less pollutant output. Other major areas of concern related to pollution prevention are that of health risk assessment, multimedia analysis, and life cycle analysis. The reader should note that accident and emergency management/ hazard assessment, another pollution prevention component, was addressed earlier in Chapter 14.
