ABSTRACT

The transition from pollution control to pollution prevention (P2) in the U.S. regulatory approach was discussed in Chapter 16, along with actions that have been taken over the last three decades to promote pollution prevention at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), throughout other federal agencies, and at the state and tribal level. This chapter looks at more detail at the Greening Government initiative that originated from the George W. Bush White House and that continues through the Obama administration. Sustainability requirements proposed on the federal government by White House initiatives starting from the Energy Policy Act of 2005 to the current Executive Order (EO) 13693 signed on March 19, 2015, are reviewed, and the progress that federal agencies have made to reach these sustainability goals are summarized in the following sections.
