ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter, I examined a method by which customers’ needs may be identied and ranked. Then, I developed a matrix to relate the what of a customer’s need to the how that need is satised in a product. Developing the matrix of what-s against how-s is the basis of developing and using a tool that in the English language is called quality function deployment (QFD). This technique has gained a wide degree of acceptance as a robust tool in the initial stages of requirements and concept development. See, for instance, Juran and De Feo (2010), Weiss (2013), or Ullman (2010).
