ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at capacity and data footprint reduction, also known as storage efficiency. Data services are the tools for enabling, configuring, allocating, or provisioning access and consuming, accelerating, protecting, monitoring, tuning, troubleshooting, remediating, reporting, and, generally speaking, managing data infrastructure resources and services for supporting information technology (IT) or business applications. Data services are the features, functionality capabilities that enable data infrastructures to support upper-level applications and IT or cloud services. Data services are implemented in various locations including applications, databases, file systems and volume managers, hypervisors, and other software-defined storage management solutions. There are similarities between various types of data services and data infrastructure management tools that will vary by specific vendor implementation, as well as how they are configured and used. Telemetry data includes health, status, activity, and events, among other items, that can be used for data infrastructure analytics, reporting, troubleshooting, diagnostics, event correlation, modeling, and forecasting.
