ABSTRACT
As discussed in the section on the early history of land tenure, delineation of boundaries is closely linked to the development of property rights. As a result, the need for a delineation process arose as soon as any group or individual claimed an exclusive right to a specific area (Larsson 1991). This is believed to have been associated with more intensive use of land, such as agriculture as opposed to hunting and gathering. Such more intensive land uses required the delimitation of claimed areas to protect the investment in the use of the land.
