ABSTRACT

Tissue engineering is a growing eld of research that shows great promise in the treatment of many human disorders. Infections and other diseases can often lead to the degeneration of certain tissue to a degree at which surgery and other techniques are rendered ineffective. Such degeneration is the cause of the high demand of organ transplants, which are highly problematic because of the increasing demand and decreasing prevalence of organ donations worldwide (Escudero and Otero 2015). For this reason, the development of techniques that allow for the treatment of such failures is necessary, and a promising avenue for this treatment is tissue engineering using polymer-based scaffolds.
