ABSTRACT

There has also been signicant progress in laser-induced fusion in recent years. In early 2014, using the world’s most powerful assembly of lasers at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, net energy extraction, i.e., more energy extracted from controlled nuclear fusion than what was absorbed by the fuel, was achieved for the rst time, crossing an important threshold on the long path toward fusion-based energy generation.
