ABSTRACT

Silicone elastomeric powders, also referred to as silicone powders, are small particles of silicone rubber (elastomer) that are usually on the order of 2-10 μm in size (see Figure 5.1). Silicone powders are used in a number of applications that fall into the major categories of personal care, plastics modification, and coatings modification. Silicone powders can be prepared by several different techniques, such as cryogenic grinding of silicone rubber, atomization of liquid silicone rubber, and an aqueous emulsion process. This chapter will deal with only powders made by the emulsion process. In the emulsion process, reactive, liquid, silicone polymers are first emulsified followed by cross-linking or vulcanization and, finally, removal of
