ABSTRACT

Abstract: This chapter presents a broad review on the recent advances in research and development of bionanocomposites as bioplastics that are used in various applications. The development of bioplastics is driven by renewability, low carbon footprint and in certain cases biodegradability (compostability) issues and helped them in moving from niche markets to high-volume applications. The inherent drawbacks of some bioplastics such as the narrow processing window, low heat deection temperatures, hydrophilicity, poor barrier, conductivity and inferior biocompatibility can be overcome by bionanocomposites. The rst part of the chapter reviews the history, recent advances in the development and various types of green polymer nanocomposites including bio based and biodegradable materials from renewable resources. In the second part, various methods of preparation of bionanocomposites based on four types of bio-llers, biopolymers and green synthesis techniques are discussed. This chapter also presents properties and biomedical applications of green polymer nanocomposites with up-to-date progress in this area in terms of processing technologies and product development.
