ABSTRACT

There are a multitude of parameters that are monitored on any given generating unit within the range of ratings covered in this book (typically synchronous generators with cylindrical rotors rated 10 MVA and larger). In a nuclear or large fossil power plant, the monitored points will reach into the hundreds. In this book, only those variables related to the generator, excitation, and generator auxiliaries are covered. In the sections below, the monitored variables are segregated based on to which internal component they belong to, as well as those monitoring the entire generator performance. A brief description is added to each one. The list is by no means complete, but it covers the most important parameters. It is incumbent to the operators, plant technicians, and engineers to possess a good understanding of how the readings from the monitored equipment fit into the big picture, that is, how the excursion of any monitored parameter outside the typical or specified range reflects a problem with the equipment. And in addition, what response is desirable for bringing operation and/or machine conditions back to normal, or in some cases, reducing load or removing the unit from operation.
