ABSTRACT

This chapter considers software as an artifact to be delivered, installed, and documented. Software is useless unless it is delivered to the customer and can be installed on his or her computer. Delivery is different, depending on whether the software is to be delivered to a single customer, to multiple customers using multiple media, or over a distribution medium such as the Internet. Once the software has been delivered, it must be installed. Installation usually follows an installation script that is included with the software. Regardless of the form of software documentation used, the documentation should be tested for accuracy and usability by persons not intimately familiar with the internal design of the software. Ideally, the persons testing the software’s documentation will be chosen from a wide range of potential users, including both experienced and novice users.
