ABSTRACT

The glycemic index (GI) has been subject to a number of criticisms, including but not limited to the following: (1) the GI methodology is not valid (Franz 1999; Pi-Sunyer 2002; DeVries 2007; Anderson 2008; Aziz 2009; Jones 2012); (2) GI is a poor predictor of healthy foods (Jones 2012) and carbohydrate quality (Slavin 2010); and (3) GI does not apply to mixed meals (Franz 1999; Pi-Sunyer 2002; Anderson 2008; Aziz 2009; Jones 2012; Wolever 2013). The following sections will address these criticisms and provide counterarguments.
