ABSTRACT

As previous chapters have discussed, modifying the glycemic index (GI) of the diet can have several health benefits, which are relevant to women at all ages and stages of life. However, two areas where the GI of a woman’s diet takes on particular importance are in the management of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and during pregnancy. The impact of dietary GI on blood glucose and insulin concentrations in both PCOS and pregnancy is one of the most significant aspects of dietary modification in both cases. This chapter discusses the nutritional management of PCOS and pregnancy, presenting the current evidence and effects of manipulating dietary GI in these situations.
