ABSTRACT

The chapter addresses pharmaceutical industry. It addresses the subject of greening chemical catalysis. It focuses on the synthetic products, because they are typically the candidates for greening. The chapter provides some exercises on the use of metrics. It gives an overview of chemical industry, with an emphasis on polymer industry, which is one of its major branches. The chapter addresses the scope of chemical industry and describes selected categories of common industrial products. It learns more about various common products of polymer industry. The chapter addresses some chemical challenges of polymer chemistry in designing and preparing polymers with desired mechanical and other properties. It shows various examples of greening of the chemical industry, including polymer industry. The chapter addresses the industrial production of polycarbonates, which is based on the use of an extremely toxic reactant, phosgene. It helps the students to understand metrics definitions sufficiently to realize that metrics actually opens the door for "quantitative greening" of chemical processes.
