ABSTRACT
This chapter briefly introduces the historical development, emergence, and merging of the fundamental digital communication techniques and optical communications to fully exploit and respond to the challenges of the availability of the ultrahigh frequency and ultra-wideband in the optical spectra of optical fiber communication technology. Furthermore, the quantum limits are given for coherent reception and extended for the case of quantum transmission.
