ABSTRACT

R adiometry can be defined as the theory of radiation detection. Radiometry includes the detection of both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. However, in this chap-

ter/book, only detectors used to measure ionizing radiation will be discussed. When exposed to ionizing radiation, such detectors provide a measurable signal, which may be electronic, resulting from a current of free charges, or optical, resulting from radioluminescence or a chemical reaction caused by free radicals generated by the radiation.
