ABSTRACT
T he concept of risk and strategies for risk communication are important topics in radiation protection. Based on the knowledge of the risks associated with exposure to
ionizing radiation, the ICRP has issued recommendations, which are also implemented in the safety standards issued by the IAEA. The basic principles for radiation protection will be discussed, as will the implementation of these principles in practical radiation protection. The radiological impact of the nuclear fuel cycle will be discussed, regarding occupational exposure, as well as exposure of the public due to these practices.
