ABSTRACT

Much of this chapter is based on information distributed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the FEMA, the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). We also used information from the Global Terrorism Database, a comprehensive collection of information about terrorist attacks and attempted attacks occurring in the United States since 1970 through 2011. e database is maintained by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism

and Responses to Terrorism (START) which is based at the University of Maryland, and is partially funded by the Science and Technology Directorate of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. You can visit the websites of these and other federal, state and university organizations to learn more about the risk of human-made hazards around the country.
