Modern society is undergoing a transformative process characterized by an “era of risk”—led by not resources or knowledge alone, but by our ability to identify, understand, anticipate, communicate and take real, meaningful action to minimize known and unknown risks due to climate and global change. Such transformations will require societies around the world to collectively re-configure how they interact with future sustainable ecosystems. Transformative processes must be peaceful, democratic, and be based on sound principles of social justice, resource equity and social welfare, otherwise they may lead to migrant and refugee crises and global uprising, as an inevitable outcome of human societies facing environmental destruction and wealth polarization (Hedges, 2015).
