ABSTRACT

Knowledge management (KM) is becoming more prevalent within law firms as well as legal departments, as the practice of KM has become more mature. KM policies, procedures, techniques, and technologies have been proven in other industries to the point where legal entities are taking notice. As with all applications of KM in other industries, KM in law firms will vary from firm to firm and from lawyer to lawyer. This chapter will focus on KM in the management of law firms and legal practitioners, specifically in the following areas: training lawyers (talent management), legal project management (LPM), legal research, precedent/case law, client support, competitive intelligence (CI), and governance of law firm knowledge assets.
