ABSTRACT

The purpose of experimentation is to increase knowledge about a phenomenon. The choice of an appropriate experimental design to be used in experimentation will be influenced by how much knowledge is already available and what additional knowledge is sought. Figure 11.1 (a compression of Figure 1.4) represents the state of knowledge as a continuum ranging from a very low state of knowledge on the left to a very high state of knowledge on the right. Under the knowledge line some appropriate stages of experimentation and their purposes are indicated.
