ABSTRACT

Cytologists have devised cytological techniques from time to time to obtain precise information on chromosome numbers, chromosome structures, size and shape, and to examine the mechanism of cell division in plant species. These properties are studied by cytological techniques. The basic principles for handling the mitotic and meiotic chromosomes of all plant species are similar and consist of collection of specimens, pretreatment, xation, and staining. However, cytological procedures are modied depending on crop species, objective of the experiments, available facilities, and, above all, personal preference of the cytologists (Sharma and Sharma, 1965; Darlington and La Cour, 1969; Jahier, 1996).
