ABSTRACT
Originally what is now ‘GIS’ was ‘Automated Cartography’, and its main purpose was the drawing of maps. Early GIS was similar, but with basic analytic functions, such as labelling and merging polygons, and drawing buffer zones. The earliest accepted GIS was a raster system for estimating the Canadian wheat harvest – see Tomlinson (1967).
