ABSTRACT

The British Medical Association has a separate committee for Staff-grade and associate specialist doctors, which aims to address poor pay, training and career progression and promotes the SAS doctors’ contribution to the National Health Service. Clinical attachments are unpaid medical observer posts that give international doctors an opportunity to see how medicine is practised in the UK. Pre-registration house officer (PRHO) posts are recognised as counting towards the pre-registration year only, not towards postgraduate training. Traditionally the PRHO year was divided into six months in medicine and six months in surgery. PRHO jobs tend to be arranged by medical schools for UK graduates. PRHOs are responsible for the day-to-day care of their team’s inpatients. PRHOs administrate all new admissions. They organise investigations and carry out instructions from the consultant and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
