ABSTRACT

In the UK, relatively few GPs receive formal training in adolescent health in general, or receive tips on how to consult with teenagers. GPs in the South Wales study (see also page xiv earlier) commented that they would value further training in communication skills with this age group. 1 This issue is beginning to receive some attention in other countries, such as Australia and the USA. This study has delineated several communication issues which can add to our understanding of communication when consulting with adolescent patients, and can be regarded as useful background training information for those who will be consulting with teenagers. The issue is also highlighted in a recent report from an Intercollegiate Working Party. 2
