ABSTRACT
Ionising radiation exists as both electromagnetic radiation and free particles. External beam radiotherapy is used to treat many malignant tumours of the head and neck, including ocular tumours such as retinoblastoma and melanoma. Choroidal melanomas can be treated by brachytherapy, in which a gamma ray emitter is applied to the sclera overlying the tumour.
