ABSTRACT

Reg was 100 years old on 4 November 2002 and is still singing in the choir, although he did not go with them to the South of France as he had planned. He recently gave Mary North his recipe for a long life - a sound faith, friends and family to love, involvement in music and becoming a vegetarian. (Mary North very kindly facilitated this interview.)

When I listen to music I get a feeling, an emotion which I don’t get otherwise. It’s different from the emotions I feel with people or with reading. It’s particularly associated with music. It’s hard to say any more about it, but it’s different from the joy you get from ‘elevated thought’ as I think Wordsworth puts it in Tintern Abbey. It is something deep. There is something in me which requires satisfaction, which is not satisfied by something airy and light, but is more tragic. I do not think it is to do with the approach of death for it has been so for a long time.
