ABSTRACT

While the theory described was being put into practice a number of useful practical issues emerged. They have been learned quite painfully in some cases and, although a few may be obvious, life would have been much easier if we had been aware of them earlier. The experience has been like handling a difficult consultation—the clues are there, but they are so often missed. Routine discussion of leadership problems has helped to identify most of the lessons we have learnt. They fall into four areas.
