ABSTRACT

A number of trainee anxieties were identified in connection with the results of assessment. They include that there were fears about how the information was being used; they were sceptical about whether any member of staff looked at what they had to say; and there seemed to be an attitude to assessment that it was 'judgemental' rather than 'educational'. All educational activities should have identifiable aims and methods as well as some form of assessment. The first step was therefore to define the aims of the proposed assessment package, which were: confidentiality, feedback, identification of individual learning needs in the areas of knowledge, skills and attitudes, assessment of the individual within the small group setting and opportunities for remedial action. The half-day release seminar is further evaluated with an emphasis on leadership function at the leaders' debriefing at the end of the teaching afternoon.
