ABSTRACT
No emergency in medicine is more dramatic than a cardiac arrest, and its management is truly a matter of life or death. Successful treatment depends upon prompt and efficient action but even in hospital, where trained staff and appropriate equipment are immediately available, management is often a matter of barely organised chaos. When arrest occurs out of hospital the dice are loaded against the doctor or the lay resuscitator and a successful outcome is all the more rewarding.
