ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to highlight the concept of a curriculum as it pertains to HPE. We will outline both methods and templates to aid learners in adopting a systematic approach to planning their year. Reference will be made to adult learning theory and professional development plans, and also to adult learning styles. It is important for learners to grasp the best method of learning for themselves. They need to understand that the cur riculum is just like a menu and that they need to choose what they want and need from that menu. It can be quite counter productive to attend didactic lectures if the preferred learning style is that of an activist (one of the learning styles, see later). Although this chapter is not intended to be a list of educational topics that may or may not pertain to HPE, we will make reference to the literature that has suggested areas or know ledge gaps that those entering general practice for the first time have highlighted.
