ABSTRACT

Leadership challenges practitioners and managers to work for the system as a whole. This does not mean that we have to put aside our preferred ways of seeing things, but it does mean that we have to value what others see. For this we each need some insight into what it is like to 'see' through different eyes, and feel through different skin. This chapter describes four techniques, Personal visualisation – rehearsing in leaders mind what they will do in real life, Vision workshop – groups of people go on an imaginary journey into the future and later describe the insights they gain. The techniques include Role-play and scenarios – a facilitator sets a scene in which people adopt unfamiliar roles, Fish bowl – a small number of people in a circle discuss something of importance, surrounded by observers. Rules govern entering and exiting the bowl.
