ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author suggests that leadership is a function that moves forwards whole stories in complex situations. Change in complex situations can be seen as play and leadership as story-weaving. Leadership for integration is advanced team-working. Leaders are leading change in a general practice to increase its performance in the new general practice contract. The practice has 8000 patients, in a deprived urban area. Leaders are leading change in a community hospital to make it more integrated with primary care activities. It has so far been largely focused on secondary care. At the local hospital different primary care practitioners work in isolation: health visitors and district nurses; podiatry; physiotherapy; dietetics and counselling. Mary Poppins was a leader in a complex situation. Poppins is the organisational development consultant who is paid to facilitate a project and leaves at the end of the contract.
