ABSTRACT

The objective of CD-ROM based information system (HANDYNET) is to promote independence for disabled people through improved access to information about topics such as daily living equipment, leisure, travel and employment. The target audience is professionals and disabled people themselves. The main area of activity is in developing the database includes technical aids; vocational training; employment; accessibility; and leisure. The Netherlands has been operating a policy of integration rather than segregation with regard to disability in society. It is funded by National Basic Health Insurance. The Netherlands, like other European countries, is introducing market principles into provision of health care. The Independent Living Movement originated in the 1980s, in Berkley, California. Servizio Informatzioni e Valuatazione Ausili is the national co-ordinating centre for HANDYNET. Activities include the development, management and distribution of a computerized information system, research programmes, a testing laboratory, and an information and advice service.
