Physical location of the receptor: ■ extracellular on the cell membrane, e.g. ligand-gated ion channels ❚ transmembrane: spanning the cell membrane and an integral part of it, ❚ e.g. neurotransmitter receptors, opioid receptors, insulin receptors and many more (see Figure 6.1a) intracellular receptors ( ❚ see Figure 6.1b), e.g. lipid-soluble steroid hormone receptors, vitamin D receptors, thyroid hormone receptors.
