Symptoms Pain is often described as a crushing, severe pain and a sensation of ■ suffocation and pressure just behind the breastbone (sternum); may be felt also in neck, arms and stomach.

Stable and unstable angina Stable angina is anginal pain due to atherosclerosis in coronary arteries. ■ Unstable angina is most often due to plaque rupture and is usually ■ signalled by new, sudden onset and severe anginal pain, usually lasting more than 15 minutes; either in cases of previously silent, undiagnosed, angina, or in patients previously with stable angina.
