ABSTRACT
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a very common arrhythmia with a prevalence of 0.5-1% in the general population. The incidence increases with age, and approximately 20% of individuals aged 80 years will have AF. Atrial transport contributes up to 20% of cardiac output. In AF, organised atrial contraction is lost and replaced by chaotic atrial electrical activity.
