ABSTRACT

However, as shown by MacDonald (1989), even two decades ago the tobacco manufacturers had started to target the potential female market. Many firms now have, it is said, a professionally qualified psychologist on their staff whose role is to advise on advertising strategies that would exploit the psychological and cognitive vulnerabilities of young girls. If absolutely proven, of course, this would constitute selling tobacco to minors, which is a criminal offence. But it is rather difficult to prove.
