ABSTRACT

The Food Frequency Framework shows how to decide which foods are suitable for everyday meals, which are better kept for once-weekly enjoyment and which are best reserved for special occasions or times when food is the centre of the feast. Find out which family meals are fine for every day and which should either be put on the 'specials' list or be modified in order to become healthy daily meals. There are three approaches that can help to introduce more nutrition and result in fewer undesirable ingredients in family meals: altering cooking techniques, reducing portion sizes of richer items and padding the meal with healthier items. Meal padding does not have to involve fruit and vegetables. Many basic ingredients are very cheap, although good sources of protein such as meat and fish tend to be more expensive, as do exotic fruits and vegetables.
