ABSTRACT
Introduction The purpose of this chapter is to establish the context of quality assurance in healthcare, of which clinical governance is the current manifestation. The basis of a framework for assessing current performance will be established and the nature of patient care, in terms of defining its quality, will be explored. The chapter starts with the general problem of defining quality and then considers the specific area of healthcare and its particular characteristics.
