      ABSTRACT

The first peer review schemes funded by the Department of Health proved to be very popular. The Self-Assessment Manual for Standards was published by the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners in 1991. It continues to be widely used by dentists as a useful reference for standards. Staff health records need to be checked as well, and robust systems must be put in place. Be especially careful when employing locum or temporary staff, or with initial employment. Good employment practice should include regular job appraisal. One approach is to identify problems as they arise and to treat them as learning opportunities. This approach has the advantage of addressing real-life challenges in real-life situations which makes the outcomes more acceptable and relevant.
