ABSTRACT

Most Indo-Asian elders would like to visit the Indian subcontinent in the winter months and return to the UK in the spring to enjoy the British summer. Assessment of the traveller's current health status must be made, including chronic illnesses like epilepsy, diabetes, heart disease, blood dyscrasia and psychological illnesses. Many Hindu and Sikh emigrants will make pilgrimage to India whereas Muslim pilgrims will be going to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj or Umra. Many elders from the Indian subcontinent who visit their families may get medical and surgical treatment while they are there. Assessment of the traveller's current health status must be made, including chronic illnesses like epilepsy, diabetes, heart disease, blood dyscrasia and psychological illnesses. Travellers who do not take chemoprophylaxis and visit the Indian subcontinent for one month or more have a malaria risk of 1:250.
