ABSTRACT

This chapter utilizes the term complementary medicine/therapy that is recognised by the public and acknowledged by the medical profession. It aims to give the reader an outline of non-conventional therapies and provides an overview of some which are practised in the United Kingdom (UK). Holistic aromatherapy uses massage and essential oils to treat emotional and physical problems. Chiropractic was developed by a Canadian osteopath to treat musculo-skeletal disorders and their effect on the nervous system by manipulation and soft tissue massage. Hydrotherapy improves the circulation, relieves pain and stiffness, and improves mobility and posture. In hypnotherapy, the patient is made to relax with the use of hypnosis. The therapy is aimed at reducing pain, bringing about changes in mental state and making suggestions for relieving symptoms. Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and healing that aims to improve the functioning of the body through its structure.
