ABSTRACT

The models The same thinking errors that occur in depression also occur in anxiety disorders. However, the predominant content of the cognitions seen in anxiety disorders relates to threat rather than to loss (Beck and Clark, 1988). Specifically, cognitive behavioural theories of anxiety state that sufíerers tend to overestimate the threat of given situations and they tend to underestimate their own ability to cope with those situations (Beck and Clark, 1988). The feared 'situation' may be limited to a discrete 'threat' such as for simple phobias, or may be much more generalised such as with panic disorder (PD) and generalised anxiety disorder (GAD).
