ABSTRACT

Drug treatment is a common management strategy for mental health problems. In the transcultural context the prescriber (who will usually be the doctor) needs to take into account the cultural nuances of drug taking, the differing responses of certain sections of the population to medicines (including variations between men and women) and the concerns of patients regarding medication. With regards to specifi c drug treatments, this chapter focuses on the commonly prescribed psychotropics: antidepressants and anxiolytics.
