ABSTRACT

These vague descriptions may resonate in an all-too-familiar manner for the busy general practitioner who cares for people with intellectual disability. The GP may be untrained in managing the health of people with intellectual disability and may be unfamiliar with the person or their carer - and the carer may have omitted to bring crucial information regarding past medical history and current medication. As a consequence the GP can understandably feel overwhelmed by the complexity of the situation and the challenges of making an assessment.
