ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book offers a supervision session where the counsellor is working with a young person in a school setting. It deals with supervising a counsellor working with a person with an alcohol problem and supervising the counselling of a client facing the diagnosis of a progressive disability. The book focuses on supervising time-limited counselling for stress. It provides a supervision session from a process of counselling a young man who is seeking to find identity and independence. The book also provides an exploration of working in areas that may be at the limit of, or beyond, the supervisee's experience, supervising a late teenager experiencing psychotic symptoms associated with cannabis use. It explores issues arising in the context of supervising the counselling of a recovering drug user, and includes parallel processing, use of empathy, 'con-figurations' and 'parts', role reversal in supervision.
